Well of Moses: where he met Zippora

When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well.  Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock (Exodus 2:15-16, NIV).

As Exodus from Egypt was considered to have taken place 1445-1446 B.C., one can recognize that this event of Moses meeting Zippora probably occurred in 1486 B.C., which was when Moses turned 40 years of age (Acts 7:23). Josephus recorded, “Moses probably chose the path in the wilderness instead of the public road in order to avoid the attention from people. He ran out of food and arrived at Midian where the Red Sea was.” It is approximately 525km between Goshen to Midian. Since the average distance a camel can travel daily is about 45-50km, Moses probably took about 9-10 days to arrive.

In the land of Midian, Moses, on his way to a well, rescued Jethro’s seven daughters from the hands of the evil shepherds. He drove them out and helped the daughters to draw water from the well. This encounter led Moses to meet Jethro, and he married Zippora, one of his daughters. This well is where Moses met Zippora, Jethro’s daughter.
